Good luck to all, the draw will be held on Thursday night/Friday morning. It is not too late to join, a few places remaining.]]>
The profile fields (the entries that are provided for you to complete) are a customisable feature of the site and as such may, from time to time, be updated with new fields or improved functionality or styling, for this reason it’s a very good idea to try and get in the habit of checking this page and if necessary revising and updating those details, especially if new detail fields are made available. We will of course post notifications about any changes which should appear as site wide notices in the right sidebar.
Below will be an updated list of any new additions or changes made to the profile data pages that you may want to add information to.
17 – 05 – 10: Google Location Maps
There is now the capability to display Google maps location data on members profile pages.
A new field has been added to the profile group called ‘Location’ this field takes a comma separated address, entered in this manner:
number, street name, town/borough, city, postcode
You can enter as detailed an address as you wish, the more detailed the more precisely your map will place show your location; however you may also simply add the city or town if you prefer and the map will simply plot the general area.
Adding functions such as this have a few intended purposes, they add interest to your profile page, they should help improve your visibility and exposure in general search terms and we hope that as more members set their location data up that it will enable the searching and grouping of members by location in the community, you may note that when entered and displayed back in your profile the address portions are shown as links which when clicked will run a search on that location detail e.g ‘London’ and should then display all members that are in the same location, this is, however, beta functionality that we will be testing in the wild so it may not work as expected initially.]]>
The invite members function within groups has been extended to allow access to the entire site member base rather than as before simply from your friends list. To help finding people there is a search function that will try and find users based on the name or partial name you enter.
The plugin has been extended to include a ‘Send Invite’ feature, this is found in your members account / profile pages and allows you to send email invites to non site members inviting them to join the community.
Sending emails from the system has to be handled with care otherwise the site domain and server can end up being entered on spam blacklists, therefore there are a few limitations in place to guard against misuse. emails are limited to batches of 5 in one go, and you need to have been a member of the community for a minimum period of 5 days which just ensures that spam signups are not able to send emails from our servers and cause us issues.
A Opt Out link is set in the email footer allowing invited members to decline the invite and also request that we do not send them further emails, this we record in the database and all email invites are first checked against the Opt Out list before that address is allowed to be used.
The latest version of the plugin V0.6 now allows your ‘Sent Invites’ list to be cleared of unwanted entries or accepted entries, this is useful if your list is growing too large and can be done on an individual basis or in batches; you can also sort the sent dates in ascending/descending order as well as sort the accepted column by accepted or pending invites.
Please feel free to use this new facility and report any issues that you may find in it’s use, it’s been pretty extensively tested but as with all new functionality little bugs may have crept in unnoticed.
